Diego Forlan claims that Real Madrid made an approach to sign him, but Atletico Madrid rejected their advances.
Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan has claimed that Real Madrid made an approach to sign him, but their advances were reject out of hand.

Los Blancos have been in the hunt for a new attacking option for much of January, and had previously been close to sealing a deal for Ruud van Nistelrooy from Hamburg, before eventually signing Emmanuel Adebayor on loan from Manchester City.

However, speaking to the media today, the Uruguayan maintains that Madrid wanted him to move across the city, but that Los Colchoneros would not entertain such a switch.

He stated: “What is true is that Real Madrid approached [CEO] Miguel Angel Gil Marin and he refused the offer. Gil Marin spoke with my agent and said that he had rejected the offer, and the rest is just speculation.”

Forlan was quick to reiterate that he is completely committed to giving his best for the club, despite the perceived interest from elsewhere.

He added: “I’m very calm, and my commitment has not changed, in the last year I have had bad times, but that does mean I am not committed any less. I try to help the team win.

“I have a contract, I am fine, and I have been here three-and-a-half years. I would love to fulfil my contract, but in football I want to accomplish things.”

The 31-year-old also admitted that he is helpless to stop the supporters giving him a negative reaction in the weekend meeting with Athletic Bilbao.

He concluded: “If there is a reaction against me, then let them, for those that know me know I will always defend this shirt, and my numbers speak for themselves.”
