Juventus striker Amauri has left Turin to join fellow Serie A club Parma, on loan until the end of the season.

Amauri has struggled to impress for Juventus this season, registering 16 appearances and no goals in Serie A. He will undoubtedly be hoping to improve on that rate during his time at Parma.

Amauri will be returning for a second spell at the Emilia-Romagna based club, after he was on their books between 2000 and 2003, though he spent much of that time on loan, and did not make a single appearance in a Parma shirt.

The Reds were initially said to have made a £30 million bid for the player on Monday morning, which was promptly rejected by Newcastle.

Fernando Torres has left Liverpool for Chelsea at the 11th hour of the winter transfer window.

The 26-year-old World Cup winner was the subject of rumours and speculation throughout transfer deadline day, but has now put pen to paper on a five-year-deal at Stamford Bridge.

The transfer saga began in earnest last week when the Reds declined an offer from Chelsea and then rejected a transfer request from Torres, insisting the player would be required to honour his long-term contract at the club.

Despite this, negotiations between the clubs continued and a conclusion was reached on Monday, allowing the forward to undergo a medical and agree personal terms with the reigning league champions.

A statement on Torres' official website said: "Spain international Fernando Torres will defend the Blue shirt of Chelsea after joining the London club on the January transfer deadline.

Amauri is about to leave Juventus for Parma on loan for the rest of the season.

A loan deal has been agreed until the end of the season when Amauri's future will come under discussion again.

Tottenham Submit Official Approach For Atletico Madrid Striker Diego Forlan

Posted by admin

Tottenham have made an official approach to Atletico Madrid for striker Diego Forlan.
Tottenham have made an official approach to Atletico Madrid for striker Diego Forlan, emerging reports from Spain suggest.

Marca comments that the Uruguayan, who has been linked with Real Madrid and Juventus already in the current window, is wanted by the London club, and will table a bid within the next few hours.

The White Hart Lane outfit have already been linked with a €45 million offer for Forlan’s compatriot at the Vicente Calderon, Sergio Aguero, as well as approaches for Villarreal’s Giuseppe Rossi and Athletic Bilbao’s World Cup-winning attacker Fernando Llorente.

Earlier today Spurs manager Harry Redknapp refuted claims of a swoop for Aguero, but did not completely rule out doing business before the end of the day, and with mere hours remaining before the January market slams shut, 31-year-old Forlan is their primary objective, and they will test the Spanish club’s resolve with a substantial offer.

The former Manchester United man, who has twice collected the Pichichi award in Spanish football for finishing the season as top goalscorer, has struggled for form in front of goal this season, and recently suggested that he would listen to offers from other sides if received.

James Beattie Joins Blackpool On Loan Until End Of Season

Posted by admin

James Beattie has joined Blackpool until the end of the season on loan following a disappointing start to his Rangers career, according to The Sun.

The former Stoke striker is looking to make a return to the Premier League having endured a turbulent time at Ibrox following his move in August, making just seven appearances for the Glasgow side.

Beattie, who is contracted until the end of the season with the option of a further year, is looking to reignite his career under Ian Holloway at Bloomfield Road.

It is highly unlikely Rangers will choose to extend the ex-Everton man’s contract, and Beattie will hope that an impressive spell at Blackpool will secure a permanent move to this year’s surprise package in the Premier League.

Werder Bremen To Sign Brazilian Defender Samuel Firmino De Jesus

Posted by admin

Brazilian centre-half Samuel is expected to sign for Werder Bremen by day's end.
Werder Bremen are expected to sign Brazilian centre-half Samuel Firmino de Jesus on a free transfer before the day's end. The Hanseaten have struggled in defence this year, and with Naldo's return date still unknown, Samuel is seen as an aid to what has proven to be a rather leaky defence.

According to Weser-Kurier, the 24-year-old free agent, who was most recently under contract at Sao Paulo, will receive a six-month contract. Because there is no fee involved, the move is, according to Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs: "A transfer without risk."

In addition to central defence, Samuel is a possible candidate for the position of left back, which has also been a problem spot for Bremen.

In the absence of Naldo, who has missed the majority of the season with a knee injury, Bremen have conceded 42 goals in 20 matches, and sunk to 15th place in the Bundesliga standings.

However, with Antonio Valencia expected to return from a broken ankle quicker than expected, Ferguson has now reportedly given Cleverley permission to stay at the DW Stadium for the remainder of the season, so as the England under-21 international can continue to get regular first team action.

Cleverley has scored three goals and put in some strong performances in his 13 appearances for Wigan so far in this campaign.

"It's not like I made a great impression at the World Cup. With the team I had we have to remain tranquil, and look at what we can improve," he told GR Parlamento.

Barcelona Defender Eric Abidal: I'm Not Surprised Real Madrid Lost To Osasuna

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has claimed he isn't surprised that Real Madrid dropped points at Osasuna.
Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has claimed that he is not surprised Real Madrid lost to Osasuna on Sunday evening, extending the Blaugrana’s lead at the top of the table.

The Camp Nou giants now enjoy a seven-point lead over their closest rivals, and also hold a vastly superior goal difference as they look to secure their third successive league title.

Speaking to the media today, Abidal, who in negotiations over a new contract with the club, said of Los Blancos’ defeat: “Osasuna played very well, had chances and could have won by more. There is no surprise because against Real Madrid and Barcelona they are highly motivated, and give everything.

“What is important for us, however, is to keep working without worrying about what others are doing. There is seventeen games remaining, and Madrid’s slip at Pamplona should serve as an alert to us.”

The 31-year-old offered words of support to international colleague Karim Benzema, who has been the subject of criticism in respect of his recent form at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Official: Blackpool Sign Andy Reid From Sunderland For Undisclosed Fee

Seasiders pick up Republic of Ireland midfielder.
Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid has completed his proposed move to Blackpool for an undisclosed fee, the Black Cats have officially confirmed.

Reports earlier on deadline day suggested that Seasiders boss Ian Holloway was weighing up a move for the former Charlton Athletic player and they have now completed the switch.

The acquisition of Reid will lead to an increase in speculation over the future of Blackpool captain Charlie Adam, who handed in a transfer request last week after a bid for his services from Liverpool was rejected.

The former Republic of Ireland international has had limited first team opportunities for Steve Bruce’s men this term following the emergence of Jordan Henderson, making just three appearances.

Reidhas recently returned from a loan spell at Sheffield United, where he made nine appearances and scored two goals, is the third player to exit the Stadium of Light in this transfer window following Pablo Da Silav’s departure to Zaragoza and David Healy’s move to Rangers.

No details have yet been released on the length of contract for the player, who will now want to help Blackpool continue their positive start to their debut Premier League season.

Yuto Nagatomo Travelling To Milan To Sign Contract With Inter

Posted by admin

Japan international Yuto Nagatomo is set to sign for Inter.
Cesena full-back Yuto Nagatomo is reportedly travelling to Milan in order to sign a contract with Scudetto holders Inter, according to Sky Sport 24.

The source reports that the Japanese Asian Cup winner has been the subject of talks between the two sides since earlier today and will complete the move before the transfer window closes.

Nagatomo moved to Cesena from FC Tokyo on loan last summer and tied up a permanent deal earlier this week.

The left-back has been one of Cesena's absolute key men in the 2010-11 campaign. Nagatomo attracted even more interest with his good performances for Japan at the 2011 Asian Cup and a move to a bigger club now seems to be on the cards.

The imminent arrival of the 24-year-old Nagatomo could mean that promising youngster Davide Santon is on his way out of Inter. The Italy international could join Cesena on a six-month loan deal as part of the deal that will take Nagatomo to Giuseppe Meazza.

Both clubs have yet to comment on the imminent transfer, but an official announcement is expected to be released in the upcoming hours.

South Korea's Park Ji-Sung Officially Retires From International Football

Posted by admin

Manchester United's Park Ji-Sung has officially called it quits from the international arena after representing South Korea 100 times.
Park Ji-Sung has officially retired from international football after representing South Korea 100 times.

The Manchester United midfielder had previously said the 2011 Asian Cup would mark the end of his South Korea career, which has lasted over a decade and included three World Cup campaigns - all of which he scored in.

He said allowing the country's burgeoning stars the oppurtunity to develop further was one of the main reasons for his departing the international arena at the age of 29.

"As you saw at the Asian Cup, there are many young players with great potential and passion for the game," Park said.

"And I think it behooves me as a veteran to let them have the opportunity to experience big matches. I felt I had to give them an opening now so that the national team can start preparing for the 2014 FIFA World Cup."

Park mentioned the likes of Hamburg starlet Son Heung-Min when speaking of Korea's new generation of stars.

He called the 2002 World Cup semi final his best moment in a South Korea jersey and the recent Asian Cup his most disappointing, as his team were knocked out by archrivals Japan at the semi-final stage.

Liverpool are believed to be interested in acquiring the services of Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll as a replacement for Fernando Torres, who has been widely reported to be on the verge of joining Chelsea.

According to The Sun, the Reds will move in on the young forward with a £30 million bid and a triple-your-wages offer to prise him away from the clutches of the Tyneside outfit.

Carroll has made a seamless transition from the Championship to the Premier League, scoring 11 goals in the process. And the 22-year-old also made his debut for the senior England squad in an international friendly.

Liverpool have also been linked with deadline day moves for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young and Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam.

Sergio Aguero Can Leave If A Club Pays The Right Price

Posted by admin

Despite recently signing a new contract, Sergio Aguero will be allowed to leave Atletico at the right price according to the club president.
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo answered questions surrounding the future of Sergio Aguero, suggesting that if a club wants to match Atleti's asking price, 'Kun' can leave.

The announcement to Marca follows reports that Real Madrid and other European big spenders were interested in acquiring the Argentine hitman.

Cerezo claimed he will permit a move for Aguero, but only if the appropriate money is offered to Atleti. The rest comes down to the intentions of the forward himself.

"If the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, will offer me €45 million for Aguero, and he expresses a desire to leave the club, I will be counting my money," the president of the Rojiblancos said.

"Players play where they want to play, this applies for both Aguero and [Diego] Forlan. Regardless of whether we have a proposal or not, Atletico Madrid is not a selling club," Cerezo underlined.

Aguero had a disappointing evening yesterday, as Atletico were defeated 2-0 by Athletic Bilbao. Both Madrid clubs will be hoping the Argentina international can impress in the next game when the club take on Barcelona.

Amauri May Seek A Deadline Day Move From Juventus

Amauri wants to fight for his place at Juventus but may be forced to seek pastures new before today's transfer window closes.
Juventus striker Amauri's agent, Gianfranco Pocetta, has not ruled out a deadline day move for the Brazilian-born player, as he continues to struggle to force his way into the starting line-up in Turin.

A mixture of injuries and poor form has seen the Italian international feature for coach Luigi Del Neri in only a handful of games, scoring only three Europa League goals all season and drawing a complete blank in Serie A.

Just over two weeks ago the forward confirmed he wanted to stay with the Old Lady and fight to regain his place in the team, but the current situation may force him to leave, with a number of clubs in Italy interested in his services, the latest being Genoa.

"Amauri would like to prove his worth at Juve," the agent told Ilsussudiario.net.

"Now, though, he needs to find a relaxed atmosphere. If he doesn't find that in Turin, then it's possible he could find another club. The situation could change in the final hours of the transfer window."

Wolfsburg Sign Jeju United's Koo Ja-Cheol After Impressive Asian Cup

Wolfsburg have signed one of Asia's brightest talents, Koo Ja-Cheol after the Jeju United man finished top scorer in the 2011 Asian Cup.
K-League side Jeju United have officially announced that Wolfsburg have signed Koo Ja-Cheol for €2 million.

The midfielder has signed a contract with Die Woelfe until June 30, 2014 and will earn an annual salary of €500,000 a year.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been considered a prospect since a tender age, coming through the South Korean national youth set-up at U-18, U-20 and U-23 level, before becoming the eighth youngest player to represent the senior national side in 2008 against China.

Koo joined Jeju in 2007 but his progress was hampered by niggling injuries before impressing last season with five goals and 12 assists, helping the club to finish as runners-up in the league after ending in mid-table the previous season.

Goal.com's Korean expert Yonghun Lee commented on the former Jeju United man: "Koo is a calm midfielder, with sharp passing and great vision. A known fan of Scotland international and Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher, he tries to play like him. He is devoted to helping the team as a whole and runs tirelessly."

Koo played as a second striker in the 2011 Asian Cup, helping South Korea finish third with the opening goal against Uzbekistan. He finished the tournament top scorer with five goals and three assists.

Inter Consider Genoa's Domenico Criscito And Cesena's Yuto Nagatomo

The performances of Davide Santon have spurred Leonardo to seek reinforcements on the left side of his Inter squad.
Inter's transfer window movements are reportedly far from over, with the Nerazzurri rumoured to be ready to pull off another coup before tonight's deadline.

Brazilian coach Leonardo watched Inter fall 2-0 behind to Palermo yesterday afternoon before calling on a super-sub debut performance from Giampaolo Pazzini to turn the game around.

The tactician's objective today will be to solve the apparent problem on the left side of his squad following another under-par performance from Davide Santon against the Rosanero.

Inter are considering two candidates in Genoa's Domenico Criscito and Cesena's Yuto Nagatomo, who have both already interested other giants such as Milan and Juventus, Tuttomercatoweb have reported.

Juventus slip further away from Champions League spots and Gianluigi Buffon calls on team-mates to stick together through difficult spell.
Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon has accepted the Turin club have a big challenge ahead of them after defeat to Udinese at the weekend in Serie A.

Juventus took the lead through Claudio Marchisio but went on to lose 2-1 as Cristian Zapata and Alexis Sanchez hit back.

"There are times when nothing goes your way. Hopefully it will not end up like last year," Buffon told Sky Sport Italia.

"I want to enjoy my return to fitness as much as possible and do it with some victories. It's clear this is a difficult time. We must overcome this period and remain united.

"Is there something missing? I have to repeat the same things. We were devastated by Calciopoli, as before that we had 11 players who had played in a World Cup final," Buffon stated.

Juventus have slipped to seventh in the league, now one point behind Udinese, and have a tough game away to Palermo next.

Saint-Etienne Ace Dimitri Payet Pushing For Paris Saint-Germain Move

Posted by admin

Paris Saint-Germain appear to have captured the heart of Saint-Etienne's Dimitri Payet, but a deal still must be concluded.
Dimitri Payet has made no secret of his desire to depart Saint-Etienne for Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day, stating that the attitude of the directors of les Verts has pushed him towards the exit.

With Sainte refusing to commit themselves to improving their first team squad in the summer, Payet reacted by refusing the board’s offer to extend his contract, which runs until 2013. Aiming to play in the 2012 European Championships, the young winger wants to strut his stuff on a higher-profile stage, and les Parisiens would give him that opportunity.

“There is a real fissure between the [Saint-Etienne] leaders and I,” Payet lamented to L’Equipe before explaining why he is interested in joining les Rouge et Bleu. “It is a project that interests me very much. Paris are second in Le Championnat, they are able to qualify for the Champions League, they are in the knockout stages of UEFA Europa League, and they are a club that could teach me.”

A deal valued at around €7 million would have to be completed on Monday, and Payet is hopeful of a positive conclusion.

“I hope we will soon find a favourable outcome to these negotiations,” he explained. “If it’s not done, I would lose, and the club would too.”

Chelsea have also been associated with a late bid for the France international in the UK, though a move to PSG looks a likelier route for Payet present.

Saint-Etienne are already lining up replacements, with Monaco’s Alejandro Alonso and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is on loan from Milan, amongst the players who could join les Verts in the forthcoming hours.

Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie has joined Milan on two-year terms.

The news comes just hours after the 34-year-old Italian revealed he would be leaving Juve to pen a deal with Milan.

Neither club has confirmed a deal as being official, but Calciomercato.com reports the units of negotiation as having been completed after Legrottaglie concluded dialogue in Milan this morning.

Catania director Pietro Lo Monaco has confirmed striker Giuseppe Mascara will not be changing clubs during the winter transfer window.

Lo Monaco says the rumour was a "journalistic invention" which arose during the transfer season. He also admits that a possible signing could be made within the next 24 hours prior to the window closing.

The director also spoke about the club's injury woes, almost struggling to field a starting XI against Milan on Saturday.

"Mascara will remain at Catania," the director told Itasportpress.it. "The rumours were only a journalistic invention."

"I won't be revealing names, but there could be a chance to make a move on a player.

The 41-year old also praised Espanyol for their performance.
Villarreal Coach Juan Carlos Garrido is delighted with his sides 1-0 victory over Espanyol.

A Giussepe Rossi strike on the stroke of half-time has consolidated third place for the Yellow Submarine as they look to qualify for next seasons Champions League.

Garrido realises the importance of claiming all three points against a side who had only lost to Barcelona at home all season prior to tonight.

"Overcoming this challenge is important for the season in many ways. For the points, because it is a direct rival in Espanyol – where only Barcelona had won here this season." he told reporters after the game.

He went on to applaud his opponents who he believes can hold their heads up high for participating in a fantastic match.

"We won fairly, but both sides should be complimented for the 90 minutes. We showed a lot of quality and commitment. I think it is very difficult to see a game better than this and everyone should leave happy. "

Villarreal are now eight points ahead of Espanyol who remain in fifth place – three points outside the top-four.

Periquitos outdone by solitary Giusseppe Rossi strike.
Espanyol Coach Mauricio Pochettino believes his side deserved a draw in their 1-0 home defeat to Villarreal.

A first-half Guisseppe Rossi strike was the difference in an evenly poised contest that saw both sides hit the woodwork.

Pochettino is proud of his players and is under no illusions that they deserved at least a point but lacked a killer instinct in front of goal.

"We're really sad because the team played well but we have had no success in front of goal.” said the Periquitos tactician.

He went onto praise his opponents for their victory and style of play.

"Villarreal had more patience in the game and scored a goal. We faced a great rival who played by merit."

Espanyol remain in fifth place, three points behind Valencia who occupy the final Champions League spot.

Liverpool Player Describes Fernando Torres' Efforts This Season As Laughable

Posted by admin

A Liverpool player has labelled the Prozone stats of Chelsea target Fernando Torres as “laughable” and accused the want-away striker of playing for himself, according to the Daily Mail.

In a week in which Torres demanded the route be cleared for his Anfield exit, the un-named player also said the personality of the World Cup winner sometimes raised eyebrows at the training ground.

The source told the paper: “His efforts for the team this season under Roy Hodgson made everyone notice.

“His Prozone stats for some games were laughable for a Premier League striker.”

Torres, who reached the 50 goal mark in just 72 games for Liverpool, was forgiven for his selfishness as a result of his undoubted ability, according to the source.

“On the pitch he'd definitely play for himself rather than the team," the source said.

“Even the real pros like Stevie Gerrard and Jamie Carragher noticed it but when Torres is on top form you'd forgive him anything.”

The report goes on to say that Torres is self-absorbed and not loved by his team-mates in the same way compatriot Pepe Reina is.

“He has always been a complex character," the unnamed player added. "He is so naturally gifted he's always been totally self-absorbed.

“For the first year we'd put his quietness down to a lack of fluent English, but then he'd come out with something word perfect, which made you realise he understood what was going on all the time.

“He has always been admired by his team-mates, but not loved. He hasn't endeared himself in the way that Pepe Reina has, for example.”

The 26-year-old submitted a transfer request on Friday evening and is expected to complete a move away from Anfield by Monday if the Reds can thrash out a deal with Chelsea.

Arjen Robben Attacks Thomas Mueller After Bayern Munich Victory

Arjen Robben appeared to strike Thomas Mueller after success over Werder Bremen.
Bayern Munich's 3-1 deconstruction of Werder Bremen was marred by controversy, as Arjen Robben appeared to strike team-mate Thomas Mueller after the whistle.

Robben blasted a late free-kick well wide and Mueller made his opinion of the kick clear with his body language, gesturing in disbelief at Robben's wayward effort.

The Flying Dutchman clearly didn't approve of Mueller's criticisms, grabbing him by the neck, before appearing to throw a fist at Mueller's face.

Bild.de reports that Mueller was unavailable for comment, but Robben made his case in no uncertain terms.

"That is not respectful," he claimed. "It is better if one discusses. But one should not gesture with their hands. "

This incident clearly points toward tension in the Bayern camp, and their challlenge to climb the Bundesliga standings will only become more difficult with these issues.

Harry Redknapp Rules Tottenham Out Of Transfer Market This January

Spurs 'won't get a striker' and a centre half or midfielder is unlikely.
Harry Redknapp confirmed Robbie Keane has joined West Ham on loan but does not expect Tottenham to replace him in the final 24 hours of the transfer window.

The Spurs boss said that the Londoners “won’t get a striker” and poured cold water on reports that they have made a late £10million bid for Scott Parker.

“No chance,” said Redknapp, speaking to reporters in his post-match press conference. “I love Scotty Parker but, believe you me, we haven’t got a chance.

“Robbie Keane has gone on loan, unfortunately. The chairman has done a deal for him to be bought at the end of the season – for £6million, I think.”

As revealed by Goal.com UK on Saturday, Spurs had a £23m bid for Newcastle United’s Andy Carroll rejected earlier in the week, although Redknapp gave mixed messages on his centre-forward targets.

“We won’t get a striker," he said. "We never made a bid for Andy Carroll, unless the chairman has made a bid. I don’t know.”

Redknapp was more concerned with his defensive resources after overseeing one of the most abject displays of his Spurs reign as they were thrashed 4-0 by Fulham and bombed out of the FA Cup.

Fernando Torres Seeks Move From Liverpool To Develop Further As A Player - Guillem Balague

Posted by admin

The Reds appear open to negotiation over transfer.
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres wants to leave the club because he feels that he can develop further as a player at a different club, according to journalist Guillem Balague.

Torres rejected interest from both Chelsea and Manchester City in the summer to stay with the club because of the loyalty he felt towards the club and its fans.

The Spanish World Cup winner shocked his employers this week by handing in a transfer request after Chelsea lodged an offer for the striker’s services.

Liverpool promptly rejected the request and stated they expected Torres to honour his contract.

“For Fernando Torres to take the step that he has taken to hand in a transfer request officially, knowing perfectly well the philosophy of the club and the love the fans have for him, it’s a huge step," Balague told Sky Sports.

"He’s done it because something was brewing in his mind, something made him realise that the pace of the club is not the pace that he needs in terms of developing.

“In his head the need to go is so huge that he is going to have to handle whatever the consequences of that is.”

Torres had still been expected to stay after the Merseyside club rejected his transfer request, however it now seems that Liverpool are open to negotiation for their striker.

Balague added: “It is clear they are talking and there is at least the possibility of a negotiation and we have to wait until 11 o’clock tomorrow [the transfer deadline] to find out.”

Luis Suarez Passes Medical And Agrees Personal Terms As Move To Liverpool Nears Completion

Posted by admin

Deal expected to be completed on Monday.
Liverpool have confirmed that striker Luis Suarez has passed his medical with the club and they expect the move to go through on Monday.

Liverpool's public pursuit of the Uruguayan striker has been a long drawn out affair but it finally appears that they have virtually landed their man.

The club agreed a fee of 26.5million Euros with the Uruguayan striker's club Ajax on Friday after negotiations had been on-going for a number of weeks.

The final details of the move are expected to be finalised tomorrow morning according to a Liverpool spokesperson:

"Luis Suarez has successfully passed his medical and personal terms with the player have been agreed. We expect to complete the remainder of the paperwork tomorrow."

The striker has been on the radar of many of Europe’s top clubs in recent seasons with his blistering goal scoring record in Dutch football.

Last season the striker, who can also play on either wing, scored 49 goals in all competitions for Ajax and also starred for the Uruguay national team in the 2010 World Cup scoring three goals.

He also caused controversy in the quarter-final win over Ghana as he intentionally hand-balled a shot which was destined for the goal in the final few moments of the game. Sunderland’s Asamoah Gyan missed the resultant spot kick much to the jubilation of Suarez standing on the sideline.

Suarez was also suspended for seven games in the Eredivisie earlier this season for biting PSV’s midfielder Otman Bakkal.

Real Madrid Midfielder Xabi Alonso Hangs On To La Liga Title Hopes

Alonso is not giving up on their league dreams despite losing to Osasuna.
Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has refused to give up on their league title hopes despite the Blancos going down 1-0 to Osasuna in Pamplona on Sunday evening.

Madrid's defeat in the Spanish Primera Division sees them fall a massive seven points behind league leaders and defending champions Barcelona, who won against Hercules on Saturday.

With Barca having won 15 successive games, there is the suggestion that Madrid's title chase is already over but Alonso doesn't buy this and has been quoted by Madrid's official website as saying, "The deficit between Barcelona and us has increased, but there are a lot of matches left to play and we need to continue chugging along.

"We know things aren't easy, but we have to look ahead and continue with the good work we have been doing."

Reflecting on their performance in Pamplona, Alonso stated, "We knew whoever scored first would hold the upper hand, but unfortunately it was them.

"The Reyno de Navarra is always a difficult place to play in because the fans are so close and they pour on the heat. The game got a lot tougher once they scored. The coach made three simultaneous changes to change match dynamics."

"We need to think ahead, focus on our next match against Sevilla and then on our next league game."

Real Madrid General Director Jorge Valdano: We Can Still Catch Up With Barcelona

Jorge Valdano believes that there are enough matches for Madrid to make up for lost points.
Real Madrid general director Jorge Valdano has maintained hope that they can win the Spanish Primera Division title despite falling seven points off the pace.

Los Blancos' 1-0 defeat to Osasuna in Pamplona on Sunday evening saw them fall further behind league leaders Barcelona, but Valdano believes that there are many games left for Jose Mourinho's side to make up for dropped points today.

"This club doesn't give up easily," said Valdano after the match, according to Madrid's official website. "We had some very demanding Copa ties to play.

"This was an unexpected outcome, but we have to pick ourselves right up. There is a lot of season left and we have the talent to win all three competitions."

Reflecting on the encounter in Pamplona, Valdano stated, "The game was a bit out of control when Adebayor came in. He is fast and makes his presence felt. I am sure he will contribute good things as he continues adapting.

"This was a tough result to swallow, but we are not throwing in the towel. We are an ambitious team and we have learned from what made this club great."

He continued, "Some matches take much more effort than others, but there is no need to be concerned about the future. We have proven that we can play well.

"We have the narrowest of margins heading into Wednesday's Copa tie [against Sevilla], but we play in front of our fans. We know how to play in finals, but we must qualify first."

Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho: We Didn't Deserve To Lose To Osasuna

Posted by admin

Mourinho claims that Madrid deserved something from their Osasuna encounter.
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has claimed that they didn't deserve to lose to Osasuna on Sunday evening.

Los Blancos suffered a 1-0 defeat in Pamplona in their Spanish Primera Division encounter and fell seven points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona. It was a closely fought encounter and Mourinho believes that his side deserved something.

"We lost three points that we didn't deserve to lose, but based on the way the opponent played, they also deserved a positive outcome," Mourinho is quoted as saying by Madrid's official website.

"The referee did a great job. My players couldn't have played out of this world based on the conditions.

"We didn't concede goals against Atletico, Sevilla or Mallorca. The team is playing well. One goal isn't reason to get dramatic, but we usually need to score.

"We had our chances. Benzema, Cristiano... But we didn't take care of business. Give credit to the opponent as well. I would rather lose like this. The opponent worked very hard for this outcome; my team did not give the match away."

The Portuguese continued, "This is our second defeat in La Liga and we are in a very difficult situation with respect to the first place team. I don't like to lose when you give the match away by not playing, not fighting or not being committed or focused.

"That is not the case. Tonight the other team played its heart out and had a week to prepare for the match. They played to the brink. Tomorrow is a new day. There will be another match and we will be there.

"Osasuna are a tough team and the crowd was fantastic. I don't think many teams win here. It's a small venue where you really feel the heat, and Osasuna is a defensive team that also plays well in attack.

"We had scoring chances, but we didn't finish. It is always a lot harder on small fields like this and when the opponent scores first. Congratulations to Osasuna."

Tottenham Have €45m Bid For Atletico Madrid Striker Sergio Aguero Rejected

Posted by admin

Tottenham have failed with a sensational swoop for Argentina international and Chelsea target Sergio Aguero.

Chelsea reportedly tried to sign the diminutive striker along with Atletico’s Uruguayan defender Diego Godin for £52million earlier this week.

Talks broke down with the Spanish club after a fee couldn’t be agreed between the clubs and Tottenham tried to take advantage despite boss Harry Redknapp’s assertion that Spurs would not be doing anymore business in the transfer window.

According to Sky Sports Tottenham had the bid rejected earlier today. They were willing to meet the release clause in Aguero’s contract but were not willing to pay the extra tax add-ons.

Atletico were not prepared to let their star man leave for this price. Aguero has the option of buying out the clause but would have to pay extra tax which, it seems, Spurs were not willing to cover.

The chase for Aguero follows a familiar story for Spurs in this January transfer window as they have had bids rejected from a number of other clubs for strikers. Most recently Spurs have had bids rejected for Spain internationals Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Negredo.

Spurs also met Llorente’s release clause but tax implications also put paid to any chance of signing the striker.

Harry Redknapp was also in Spain last week to watch Diego Forlan play with a view to following up is interest in the Uruguay striker.

The Japanese forward arrives in the Bundesliga.
VfB Stuttgart have signed Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki on a free transfers from Shimuzu S-Pulse.

The 24-year-old forward has scored 21 times in 38 appearances for his national team, thus catching the eye of the Bundesliga strugglers.

Okazaki has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, and will arrive at his new club on Friday.

The player told Stuttgart's official website, "I hope that I can contribute a lot to this team. I feel that my strengths are my ability to run, and in front of goal.

"In recent months I've felt a lot of stress, but another strength of mine is that I'm very resilient. I just need a few days to turn off, and then I'll be back in great condition.

"I know that the Bundesliga is a very physical, very high-level league. I'm looking forward to this challenge."

Okazaki scored three goals at the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar, which Japan won by beating Australia in extra-time in the final.

Inter Coach Leonardo Pleased With Comeback Victory Over Palermo

Coach Leonardo heaped praise on Inter’s new hero Giampaolo Pazzini.
As Inter came from two goals down to seal a 3-2 victory over Palermo, Nerazzurri tactician Leonardo paid special tribute to Giampaolo Pazzini who scored a brace on his debut.

“It was a beautiful game,” he declared to SkySport.

“We started in difficulty and were punished by a great Palermo side.

“Ending the first half two goals down was a little hard on my men given the amount they created out there.

“After the break the boys came out even more determined and with the aid of ‘Pazzo’ [Pazzini] we were able to turn the result around.

“The boy played a great game as did the whole side and I was delighted with the spirit shown out there.

“Given the ability of the opposition this afternoon it makes the win all the more sweet.

“Palermo put us into difficulty on numerous occasions but we came through with our strength in character.

“It’s true that we are continuing to concede a few too many goals but ultimately the result is what matters and these three points are worth everything at this stage in the season.”

Ajax Make Official Offer For Utrecht's Dries Mertens In Bid To Replace Luis Suarez

Posted by admin

Utrecht's Dries Mertens is the man Ajax have lined up as a proxy for Liverpool-bound Luis Suarez.
FC Utrecht have confirmed that Ajax have made a bid for diminutive winger Dries Mertens as the Godenzonen search for a replacement for Luis Suarez, who is on the verge of completing his €26.5 million move to Liverpool.

Utrecht technical director Foeke Booy admitted to Eredivisie Live that Ajax tabled a bid for the 23-year-old on Friday, the same day the Amsterdam giants gave permission for the English club to speak to Suarez. However, Booy was quick to add that the offer was rejected and the Utreg will work to keep Mertens at the club.

"We are not eager to let Mertens go," said Booy. "The transfer market closes on Monday, but we have a deadline for Ajax. Mertens is an important player for us. We don't want to just let him go. We must speak with Dries himself, but other than that I don't have too much to say about it."

Mertens has spent 18 months in Utrecht, scoring six goals in 34 games since signing from AGOVV. The former Anderlecht youth made his breakthrough into senior football in loan spells with Eendracht Aalst and AGOVV whilst on the books of Gent.

Manchester United Owners Ready To Raise Old Trafford Ticket Prices

Posted by admin

Manchester United are pending a controversial decision on whether or not to raise ticket prices by 11 per cent, according to a report in The News of the World.

The Glazer family have been heavily criticised for putting up admission prices in the past - increases which have seen ticket prices rise by an average of 67% since their arrival back in 2005.

The Americans’ decision to freeze season ticket prices was approved by the fans last season, following a public protest, yet a year earlier United were the only club to raise ticket prices in the Premier League against the economic backdrop of a rise in the unemployment rate to 2.5 million.

However, Malcolm Glazer is now ready to risk another chunk of the club’s support if he decides to follow through with a suggested five to 11 per cent rise in ticket prices – which could see fans pay up to £80 on top of the average £722 cost of a season pass.

United recently paid off £220 million of their high-interest PIK loan, pushing their debt down to a more manageable £510 million deficit.

Whilst the Glazers target gate-receipts, United have seen the season-ticket waiting list weaken in the past year, with empty rows clearly visible within their 76,000-seater Old Trafford stadium.

A decision on whether or not to implement the proposed ticket price increase is expected in April.

Milan Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Winning In Catania Was Not Easy

Posted by admin

Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic admits that winning against Catania was difficult.
Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has admitted that winning against Catania in Sicily on Saturday was tough.

The Rossoneri were reduced to 10 men early in the second half but scored twice thereafter to register a 2-0 victory in Serie A. Ibrahimovic was the protagonist of the win as he provided the assist for Robinho's opener and then scored the second.

However, after the game the Swedish striker admitted that Catania had made it tough for them and, according to Milan's official website, said: ‘It was important to win. I think that by winning here we made a statement.

"It’s not easy to play in this stadium, away from home, against an aggressive and strong Catania.

"We earned an important win thanks to our great will, it wasn’t easy with one man down. Paradoxically, with 10 against 11 we had more space and created bigger chances.

"I was very happy about my goal, because being up 2-0 we didn’t have to worry in the final minutes of the game. We just had to concentrate on defending."

Fernando Torres Has Been Wanting To Leave Liverpool For Over A Year

Posted by admin

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has reportedly wanted to make a move to Chelsea for over a year.

The Reds recently rejected a bid from the west London club - thought to be in the region of £35 million - to acquire the services of the Spaniard.

Goal.com UK has since exclusively revealed that the Merseysiders have asked for Nicolas Anelka to be thrown in as part of a £50m move that would see the former Atletico Madrid man switch allegiances from Anfield to Stamford Bridge.

Now The News of the World claims that the World Cup winner has harboured hopes of a move away from his current club since December, 2009.

The Blues are reported to have made a £25m approach last summer after Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League, but nothing came of it then.

However, it is thought that things have changed now since their absence from Europe's top club competition could stretch by another year owing to an underwhelming campaign so far.

According to The Mirror, the Spain international also informed his skipper Steven Gerrard of his desire to leave the club, prior to handing in a transfer request.

Torres has scored nine goals in 23 Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season.

Barcelona Plotting A £40 Million Summer Swoop For Tottenham's Gareth Bale

Posted by admin

Barcelona are believed to be prepared to test Tottenham Hotspur's determination to keep Gareth Bale at White Hart Lane by lodging a £40 million bid for the wide man in the summer.

The 21-year-old has been in the form of his life this season, having successfully established himself at Spurs through strong performances on both the domestic and European stages.

The north London club have so far been adamant that their prized asset is not for sale at any price, but The Mirror reports that Barca still intend to test that resolve by putting in a £40m bid for the left-footed player in the summer.

It has been reported that even the hint of a sale would spark offers for Bale from AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Arsenal Striker Nicklas Bendtner Aspires To Become The Next Thierry Henry And Confirms Stay At The Emirates

Posted by admin

Wenger claims the Dane is a 'top quality' striker.
Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner has revealed that his inspiration stems from previous Gunners legend Thierry Henry and hopes it will help propel the club into a winning era.

The Danish international scored an Henry-esque goal against Ipswich Town last week which helped push the red-and-white outfit into the League Cup final and within 90 minutes of bringing silverware back to the Emirates following a six-year drought.

"It's fantastic to be in the final. I think this is the start of something bigger and if we win it will give us not only a confidence boost but also a trophy, something we haven't had for a long time,” said Bendtner, according to The News of the World.

"I'm looking forward to the final so much. It's the first chance for me to win a trophy and it's the same for some of the other lads."

Bendtner is hoping that their triumph in the League Cup will boost the current squad to the level achieved by the 'Invincibles' in 2003-04.

The Dane praised Henry’s presence on the training ground, as the Frenchman spent the opening weeks of the new year at Bell Lane, preparing for a busy season with the New York Red Bulls in the MLS.

Stoke City Forward Tuncay Close To Wolfsburg Switch

Posted by admin

Stoke City striker Tuncay is on the verge of completing a switch to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, reports suggest.

According to Bild, the Turkish forward is set to be one of two incoming players, the other being Schalke’s Jefferson Farfan.

The 29-year-old has struggled to cement a regular first-team place at the Britannia Stadium this term, particularly with the arrival of Kenwyne Jones in the summer.

As a result, Tuncay has appeared just 14 times in the league and has scored one goal in Stoke’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in October.

Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren has previously stated his frustration at the size of his squad and has insisted he requires several additions in order to compete with the Bundesliga front runners.

Samir Nasri Limps Out Of Arsenal's FA Cup Tie With A Muscle Injury

Posted by admin

Arsenal play Barcelona in two weeks' time.
Samir Nasri limped out of Arsenal's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Huddersfield Town after just 31 minutes with a suspected hamstring strain.

The France international was chasing a loose ball when he suddenly pulled up and signalled to the bench that he could not continue.

Any potential injury will be damaging to Arsene Wenger's plans considering how influential the midfielder has been this term.

Wenger elected to ring seven changes to the side which beat Ipswich in their semi-final second leg on Tuesday, with Nasri being one of those reintroduced back into the side.

The length of time Nasri may potentially be sidelined will vary depending on the seriousness of the injury, but with Arsenal's Champions League last 16 clash with Barcelona just two weeks away, Wenger will be hoping one of his key players will be back in contention before his side resume their European exertions.

England Coach Fabio Capello: Tottenham's Gareth Bale Is Player Of The Season So Far

Posted by admin

Italian likens winger to a "big explosion".
England manager Fabio Capello believes that Tottenham Hotspur wide-man Gareth Bale is the player of the season thus far.

The Welsh winger has continued his fine form of the last half of last season and translated domestic dominance onto the European stage.

The 21-year-old has silenced many, if not all, of his critics by putting in stellar performances in the Premier League and Champions League, with his two games against current European champions Inter arguably being the standout solo performances of the season.

Former Juventus and Real Madrid boss Capello is just one of the many leading figures in the game to have been impressed by the Spurs sensation.

"He is my player of the season so far," said Capello, according to The Guardian.

"For me he is a fantastic player because when you prepare for a game you have to prepare to defend when he receives the ball.

"He is a big explosion, physically. But he is also so good technically. Every pass, every cross, every time, he is dangerous. He is so dangerous for opponents because he runs so fast with the ball."

Brescia Coach Mario Beretta Downbeat Following Heavy Defeat Against Chievo

Coach Mario Beretta urged his men not to give in after defeat against relegation rivals Chievo.
As Brescia sustained their fifth defeat in six games following a disastrous showing in the 3-0 loss against Chievo, Rondinelle coach Mario Beretta looked to encourage his side who are sitting in dangerous waters just two points off the base of the standings.

“I am sorry for the boys,” he declared to SkySport.

“They work hard all week and it is never nice to be whistled by the fans.

“This afternoon, however, we were poor and it’s right that the supporters are not content with what they have seen.

“We struggled to make the most of our capabilities and we clearly need to work harder.

“The manner in which we went behind on the stroke of halftime really cut our legs off as until that moment the game was quite balanced.

“Now we must stay united and look forward as only together will we climb out of this difficult situation.”

Martin Skrtel Full Of Praise For Liverpool's Rookie Right-Back Martin Kelly

Posted by admin

Slovakia international also hails Meireles.
Liverpool's Martin Skrtel has hailed fellow team-mate and young defender Martin Kelly, who has figured in all five games managed by new boss Kenny Dalglish.

The Reds manager went three games without a victory before notching up his first win in his second stint in the Anfield hotseat at Wolves last week and then went on to defeat Fulham in midweek, with the young right-back showing signs of potential throughout that period.

"I think Martin Kelly is doing really well for us," Skrtel told the club's official website. "I remember when he played against Chelsea at Anfield this season and was one of our best players.

"He did extremely well playing against their big stars and he competed very well with them.

"He is working really hard and I am happy for him because he is a nice guy and a great player."

Skrtel also paid tribute to midfielder Raul Meireles, who has been an integral force in the Reds' rise in fortunes in recent times.

"He's a great player with a lot of quality and he showed this when he played for Porto and he is doing the same now at Liverpool," he said.

"It was an unbelievable goal he scored against Wolves and I saw it very clear because I was right behind him.

"It was one of the best goals I have seen this season."

Manchester City To Decline Written Transfer Request From Winger Shaun Wright-Phillips

Posted by admin

Manchester City will reportedly not allow Shaun Wright-Phillips to leave the club, despite the player being on the fringes of the squad and making just two Premier League starts this season.

The winger was signed in the summer of 2008 by then manager Mark Hughes, who is keen on bringing him to Fulham this January.

The 29-year-old is believed to have handed in a transfer request in order to find first team football and hasten his exit.

According to Sky Sports News, City have not yet been offered any acceptable bids for the winger.

Roberto Mancini is rumoured to be reluctant to let the player go unless a suitable permanent deal is arranged.

Fulham are expected to monitor the situation closely with a view to snapping him up before the transfer window shuts on Monday evening.

As Chievo momentarily put their relegation fears behind them with a big victory away to relegation rivals Brescia, Gialloblu coach Stefano Pioli praised his men for their determined approach away from home.

“We are delighted following this important win,” he declared to SkySport.

“The side is getting back on track and this is very important at this stage of the season.

“I am well aware that there is still much work to do but right now we are playing well and this is encouraging.

Michael Owen Believes Manchester United's Quality Helped Them Overcome Hard Working Southampton In FA Cup

Posted by admin on Saturday 29 January 2011

Fitness wasn't an issue, says former England man.
Michael Owen believes Manchester United's longevity was the reason they were able to progress into the fifth round of the FA Cup against Southampton.

The striker was on target with a typically poached effort to level the match, before Chicharito bagged the winner in the 75th minute.

"Well, obviously they played well, they're flying high in their division, and always in FA Cups - no matter what standard you're playing against - it's always really tough for sort of 45 minutes or an hour," the former Liverpool man said.

"Inevitably, you know, the better quality - and it's not fitness, obviously they've got to run more to keep up with us in many ways and then they tire - and it's often the way that the better teams come good in the last half hour."

Owen went on to talk about how experiences earlier on this year in the Carling Cup helped United overcome their League One opponents.

"Well we weren't pleased obviously, but we played in the Carling Cup earlier in the year against Scunthorpe away and it was similar there," he added.

"They went a goal ahead and it was only in the sort of last half hour when we ran away with it.

"And it is quite similar, as I say, against these lower league teams in that they're very difficult for the first hour and then you tend to get on top after that."

Kozak underlines importance of keeping Lazio momemtum after win over Fiorentina.
Libor Kozak has promised more goals and admits he is ready to strike again anytime he is called upon by Lazio coach Edy Reja after his brace against Fiorentina.

A penalty and a header within five second half minutes from Kozak was the difference between Lazio and Fiorentina as the Romans ran out 2-0 winners at the Olimpico to rekindle their relationship with the winning feeling following last week's loss at Bologna.

"When the coach calls me I always try to do the maximum, and today was a great emotion for me," he told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

"We won a game that was very important for me. We knew the last game was poor and we spoke about it.

"Today we gave our maximum."

Emmanuel Eboue Confident Of Success As Arsenal Look To Win First Trophy In Six Years

Posted by admin

Ivorian believes this may be a 'special season' for the Gunners.
Emmanuel Eboue has vowed to help Arsenal all he can to ensure they bring success to the Emirates faithful this season.

The Ivory Coast international has been used mainly from the bench for Arsene Wenger’s side this campaign and made a useful impact on Tuesday when he deputised for Bacary Sagna who left the field after sustaining a head injury against Ipswich in the League Cup semi-final.

"I have this team in my heart, in fact it does not matter if I don't play, I still want us to win from the bottom of my heart," said Eboue.

The Ivorian is set to start against Huddersfield on Sunday in the Gunners FA Cups fourth-round tie at the Emirates Stadium, as Wenger looks to keep injuries to a minimum as his side continue their push for silverware in four competitions.

Eboue is now a favourite amongst the Arsenal supporters, having won over supporters after a poor performance against Wigan in 2008. The 27-year old is confident the team can bring trophies back to north London after a six year drought.

"This is a team that can win something, for sure. If we continue to play our football and with confidence the side has, I certainly believe that," he added.

"I will be ready to give everything I can to try to make this season something special."

"It was a bad performance even though I felt we were in control early in the second half," Mihajlovic told Sky Sport Italia.

"Then the penalty changed the game. We were able to move the ball and they seemed in difficulty after Gaetano D'agostino came on.

"But, we have to worry seeing that the last two performances have not gone well. We are in a tough situation, but we can come out of it if we show unity.

"We have to prepare well for the next game against Genoa."

Keisuke Honda Expresses Satisfaction At Winning Tournament With Japan

Posted by admin

Japan's Keisuke Honda has been left delighted with what his side have achieved in the Asian Cup, culminating in the win over Australia.
Having won the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 Asian Cup, Keisuke Honda was overwhelmed by the occasion and was proud that Japan claimed a fourth continental title, defeating Australia 1-0 in the final.

Honda’s career has been on the rise in the last year or so, becoming the first Japanese player to feature in the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League and following it up with an eye-catching performance at the 2010 World Cup.

“It is great time for me. I am satisfied to become champion,” Honda told Goal.com after the final.

“Yeah, I’m really so happy,” he added.

Speaking on the game against Australia, Honda mentioned that he didn’t think the match would come to a conclusion in extra-time.

“It was a very difficult game. Of course, I expected that in the end. I expected penalties,” the CSKA Moscow star said.

Japan didn’t quite find their footing in the match as their usual free-flowing style of football went missing, and Honda was clueless as to why.

“I don’t know,” he shrugged. “Everybody likes to attack and we try to keep the ball. I think we need to improve as we [are] never satisfied.”

On being asked as to whether this Japanese team can go on to win the World Cup, Honda replied: “I don’t know but we’ll try.”

Robinho Hails Milan's Fighting Spirit After Win Over Catania

Robinho was proud of the Rossoneri's display against Catania.
Milan goalscorer Robinho hailed the Rossoneri’s fighting spirit following the 2-0 win over Catania on Saturday night.
A win seemed be out of the Rossoneri’s reach after Mark Van Bommel was sent off in his Serie A debut in the 54th minute but goals from the Brazilian and Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave the visitors three vital points.

Robinho hailed his side's performance and believes the Diavoli showed their championship mettle after leaving the Angelo Massimino cauldron with all three points in tow.

"I'm very happy with the win tonight," he told Sky Sport Italia after the final whistle. "It's a difficult place to play especially against a team that defends well. We are first in the standings with 15 to 20 games left and we must continue to play well.

"It's difficult to play with ten men and in my opinion Van Bommel did not deserve his second yellow card," Robinho concluded.

Milan have a seven-point cushion at the top of the table ahead of Sunday's matches in Serie A.

Holger Osieck Laments Australia’s Poor Finishing In Japan Final Defeat

Posted by admin

An inability to put the ball in the net was fatal for Australia, Holger Osieck has stated.
Australia coach Holger Osieck has been left to rue his side’s missed chances during their 1-0 Asian Cup final defeat against Japan on Saturday night.

The Socceroos created a host of chances during normal time but failed to beat in-form Japanese goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima.

“We had our opportunities and what is always encouraging is the way we play and we create opportunities,” the coach stated to the media after the game.

“However, it is crucial to convert them and later on in the game it backfired and that is a problem. We had to be more clinical in our finishing and it's not enough to win a game if you don't score.

“We have seen a very exciting game between two very good teams. You can imagine we are disappointed, we definitely had our opportunities but unfortunately we couldn't convert.”

German-born coach Osieck believes his side perhaps deserved better than the extra-time defeat.

“I'm very proud of my players, their performance and their attitude. I give them credit and really feel sorry for the boys that they didn't get the reward for their efforts. You can imagine in our dressing room it's not a great atmosphere, everybody's really sad.

“All in all, our team represented Australia in a great way.”

When Australia next attempt to claim the Asian crown, they will do so on home soil in four years' time.

Diego Simeone: We Played Well For 50 Minutes Against Milan

Simeone was disappointed with Catania’s second half display against Milan.
Diego Simeone is still searching for his first win since taking charge of Catania earlier this month as the Elefanti slumped to a 2-0 defeat to ten-man Milan at the Stadio Angelo Massimino.
After a drab first half, Rossoneri midfielder Mark Van Bommel was sent off in the 54th minute and the tide looked to have swung in Catania’s favour. However, goals from Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic handed the Argentine coach his second loss in as many matches.

Simeone was not pleased with his players’ display after Van Bommel was dismissed and vowed his team would bounce back from the setback.

"We played well for 50 minutes tonight," he told reporters after the game. "The boys did everything they could but didn't have the legs in the second half.

"We will work hard in the coming weeks," he concluded.

Catania are winless in their last five Serie A matches and hover just three points above the relegation zone.
