Rafael Benitez Blames Inter Medics & Reluctance To Spend For Departure

Inter's former coach Benitez said the club's failure to co-operate and adhere to his demands led to his exit.
Rafael Benitez has said a lack of support from Inter undermined his position and eroded every chance of a permanent stay at the club, leading to his exit in December.

The Spanish coach said being kept at arms length from dealing directly with injuries, as well as being stopped from wielding his influence on the transfer front, led to the shortcomings witnessed during his brief spell.

"I want to show some statistics based on the injuries so I am not misunderstood: 80 per cent of those injured had had the same or similar injuries in the previous two years," Benitez told Marca.

"Myself and my staff did not have control over medical issues or the work of the club medic and his atheltic coach.

"We did not follow therapies or recoveries. And, a month after we left Inter there were eight muscular injuries.

"I am sure Roberto Mancini is familiar with all of this."

One of the things that critics suggested led to failure was the lack of investment when Benitez arrived. The Spaniard said Inter were willing to follow his designs, but things went bad.

"Massimo Moratti knew we worked with difficulty. Some players performed, others didn't. He knew things were not going well, but there were no conditions to carry on. So we arrived at the recission," he added.

"I had started well, but then things changed, internally too.

"Opinions always changed. I don't know why there was no summer transfer market and I was surprised.

"They had asked me for a project to improve the squad... I wrote things down and the directors liked it, but then nothing happend."
